If you have ever visited Hungary, you will know that thermal baths are not just a tourist attraction, they are a way of life.
From Budapest’s grand historic bathhouses to the quiet spa towns dotted across the countryside, Hungarians have been slipping into naturally heated mineral waters for centuries. Not just for relaxation, but for genuine, medically recognised healing. It is woven into the culture, passed down through generations, and backed by real science.
And for me? It is also deeply personal.

My Connection to Hungarian Thermal Waters
Over 22 years ago, I qualified as a Natural Healer in Hungary and medicinal thermal waters was one of the specialist topics I studied and was formally examined on.
Long before that, I have fond memories of my Granny Vilma teaching me about natural healing, foraging for herbs, making teas and tinctures, understanding that nature has everything our bodies need if we just know where to look.
That early wisdom, combined with years of formal study and 22 years of practice as a holistic therapist, is what eventually led me to bring authentic Hungarian medicinal water creams to my treatment room here in Ireland. Because I truly believe that what I was taught in Hungary deserves to be shared, and your body deserves the very best that nature has to offer

So What Makes Hungarian Thermal Water So Special?
Hungary sits on one of the most extraordinary geothermal regions in the world. Its medicinal waters rise naturally from deep underground — sometimes from depths of 50 to 70 metres — at temperatures of up to 62°C, rich in minerals and healing compounds that simply cannot be replicated artificially.
What sets these waters apart medically is their unique mineral composition — particularly their sulphur-based compounds, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements that are absorbed deeply and efficiently through the skin. Far more effectively, in fact, than many other compounds.
One of the most significant of these is **carbonyl sulphide (COS)** — a naturally occurring sulphur compound found particularly in the waters of Harkány. It is absorbed through the skin up to **150 times more effectively** than other sulphur compounds, and is scientifically proven to support the rebuilding of joint cartilage. This is not folklore — this is chemistry. ✨
Beyond the mineral action, thermal water also works through hydrostatic pressure and heat effects, helping to reduce the load on weight-bearing joints, ease inflammation, support circulation and encourage lymphatic flow.
Hungary’s medicinal waters are used in clinical rehabilitation settings right across Europe — for orthopaedic recovery, rheumatological conditions, neurological complaints and more. They are not alternative medicine. They are simply medicine — gentle, natural, and extraordinarily effective.

The Four Healing Waters I Use in My Practice
I work with professional massage creams formulated with high concentrations of genuine medicinal thermal water from four of Hungary’s most celebrated spa towns. Each one has its own unique therapeutic properties, and I select the most appropriate cream for each client individually.
Harkány
Unique in Europe, the medicinal water of Harkány is particularly renowned for its exceptionally high carbonyl sulphide content — making it outstanding for joint health, arthritis, rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, sciatica and circulatory conditions. It also has a long tradition of supporting skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and has been associated with fertility support.
Hajdúszoboszló
One of Hungary’s most famous spa towns, Hajdúszoboszló water is particularly effective for muscle and bone injuries, chronic locomotor disorders, arthritis and muscle tension. Its cream is enriched with essential oil of juniper, which enhances its deeply penetrating and muscle-relaxing properties.
Bükfürdő
Bükfürdő thermal water is clinically recognised for its broad therapeutic applications and is widely used in rehabilitation programmes across Hungary. Particularly valuable for accident recovery, post-surgical rehabilitation, neuralgic pain, disc problems, lumbago, osteoporosis and Bechterew’s disease. Its cream contains a special pepper extract which works alongside the medicinal water to significantly reduce pain sensation.
Hévíz
Home to the largest natural thermal lake in Europe, Hévíz water is particularly rich in micro and trace elements with well-documented benefits for rheumatic and arthritic conditions. The cream is beautifully formulated with Boswellia, chamomile, marigold flower extract, shea butter and rosemary oil — making it as nourishing for the skin as it is therapeutic for the body.

How I Use These Creams in My Practice
I have created a treatment around these extraordinary creams — my **Signature Hungarian Thermal Remedial Massage**.
This is a 60 minute holistic massage treatment where I personally select the most appropriate medicinal water cream for your individual needs before your session begins. The massage itself then enhances the absorption of the active compounds deep into your skin and soft tissue — maximising the therapeutic effect in a way that simply applying a cream at home cannot replicate.
This treatment may be particularly supportive for:
– Arthritis, rheumatism and chronic joint inflammation
– Muscle and soft tissue injuries
– Recovery after orthopaedic or neurosurgical procedures
– Chronic back pain, lumbago and disc-related conditions
– Sciatica and neuralgic pain
– Spondylosis, osteoporosis and degenerative joint conditions
– Gout and Bechterew’s disease
– Circulatory disturbance of the lower limbs
– Psoriasis, eczema and certain chronic skin conditions
– Fertility support
– General muscle tension, fatigue and stress-related physical symptoms I want to be honest with you — this is not a cure, and I would never promise that. But it is real, researched, natural support — delivered with genuine care and 22 years of knowledge behind every session.
The Creams Are Also Available to Take Home
If you would like to continue the benefits between sessions, the medicinal water creams are also available to purchase in 75g tubes directly from my practice. Ask me at your next appointment which cream would be most suitable for you.

A Final Thought
There is something deeply moving to me about bringing this piece of my homeland to Ireland — a country I have fallen completely in love with since moving here in 2014.
Hungary and Ireland are very different places, but they share something beautiful — a deep respect for nature, for tradition, and for the kind of quiet, gentle wisdom that gets passed down through generations.
My Granny Vilma taught me to look to nature first.
22 years of study and practice taught me how.
And my clients here in Ireland inspire me every single day to keep learning, keep growing, and keep sharing. 🌿
